001 ArtMetal Radio - 2005 ArtMetal Shindig
The 2005 ArtMetal Shindig was held on July 13, 2005 just off of Storytown Road near Brooklyn, Wisconsin. Four great days of camaraderie! Even the sweltering heat could not hamper the excitement and electrifying energy that this tight nit group of artists craftsmen have. Do you know what its like to communicate on a daily basis with someone who you have never physically met for over ten years? It was like the pressure building up in a bottle of champagne over time, and then finally releasing the metal wire cage from the cork. You just can’t get it off quick enough to prevent the cork from "POP’ing" like a rocket from the bottle.
During this same time period, I was turned on to podcasting. I was intrigued with the concepts behind creating audio journals of special events. Being able to communicate via the Internet using audio takes us into another realm. It’s not tv, nor is it traditional radio broadcasting. Podcasting gives the individual citizen the ability to communicate their personal views of life. The ability to use sound to create an image of a place, thing, or concept is simply ethereal!
So, I decided I would document this very special event with a tiny little iRiver recorder and some stereo "stealth" mics that I kept clipped to my glasses just behind either side of my ears. I did announce that I was going to be recording the event, but most people had no idea I was recording the conversations. This made for a more relaxed recording environment and allowed me to record real people in real time so that what you will hear is coming from the real place in their hearts.
