I’m back after a rather full week of cleaning sub-zero ice cake from alaska’s highways and biways in the Anchorage area. I won’t get into all the ins and outs of cutting cake, cleaning highway ramps, overpasses and such except to say running a grader in these conditions is tiring.
Just after thanksgiving it snowed a good 8-10" at just the right temp for traffic to pack it into cake immediately. Then the temp dropped to bare single digit highs below zero (f) lowsl. Ice cake at this temp has many qualities in common with 4140 Kryptonite, it tends to break heavy equipment sent to cut it rather than the other way around.
Fortunately there were no real adventures this week, a few ditch divers and another luminaire taken out by somebody who doesn’t think ice fog is a reason to drive less than 80 mph.
The word processing properties of the ArtMetal Radio site seem to be working more smoothly now. I don’t know if QuiQue fine tuned it or my server is running faster bandwidth-wise. Don’t really care, it’s working nicely so I’m not sitting here waiting for the next word to slowly type itself ou for some timet after I input it.
So, I’m a happy guy.
Hope the pic came out. It’s been almost a week since QuiQue told me how to insert one so there’s no telling if I got it right.
Right now I’m not sure exactly how I’m going to use a blog but I’ll give it a go. I’ll try not to do too much rambling though no promises. My rants usually don’t last long but there have been exceptions.
I probably won’t bore you too much (we’ll see) with local Alaskan weather though I have to tell you it’s COLD right now. There are a limited number of good things about sub-zero weather. Pretty, it’s really pretty out, hoar frost covering everything and I mean everything, the goats had a nice coat of frost on them this morning. Splitting wood is another good thing about sub-zero temps. Instead of needing a wedge and sledge a 7 1/2 lb double bitted axe on a 3/4 "boys" handle splits 2′+ diameter rounds with one or two whacks.
Hanging out around a wood stove drinking toddies is a good thing about sub-zero weather as is hot tubbing on the upper deck. Our hot tub is on the north side upper deck right off the master bedroom so Deb and I can dry off and be in bed before we chill.
A wool cap and there’s NO better way to view the northern lights, meteor showers or stars on a clear night. Of course jogging barefoot to the bedroom door is a screaming bitch but what the hey.
Okay, that’s it for the weather, it’s COLD.
Podcasts. QuiQue and I are planning on doing one soon and coordinating the visual part with flickr and these Blogs. I’m not sure how it’s going to work out, I imagine I’ll post my show notes here. . . Maybe. . . There! Or. . . ? Okay, I’m just playing around. We’ll let you know where we hid them when we get the latest show online.
Our first podcast will be interviewing the lovely Alex.
We’ll be picking her brain about making web sites the top choice for search engines.
I’m looking foreward to podcasts. I’ve thought it’d be fun to do a radio show for many years and this’ll show me if the reality is as good as the fantasy. I’m not that good at fantasizing things so the reality sould be fun. For me anyway, if you don’t like. . .
Okay, I’m having too much fun I’d better post this before I get in trouble.
Later.
Frosty

Well Jerry, I have to say that I want to see a picture of you layed back drinking that hot tottie by that warm wood stove!
Hay, and kudos to you for putting up a good first blog!
I get a great visual of you and Deb tiptoeing bare and barefooted as well as you dash from the tub to shelter.
By the way, I knew that you wouldn’t have any problem blogging.
Hey Frosto
Cool site, love the flickr slide shows. Wish it was 90 degrees again!
